Southern California Association of Governments
The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is the largest regional planning agency in the United States.  It is responsible for supporting Southern California municipalities with issues related to transportation, housing, labor, and air quality.  SCAG wanted to evaluate the regional impact of rapidly aging baby boomers from racially and linguistically diverse backgrounds.  SCAG contracted Maroon Society to develop recommendations on how they can best meet the needs of these aging and highly diverse communities.  To address these shifts, we conducted an in-depth demographic analysis of regional diversity and community needs related to housing, transportation and walkability.  We developed a plan that outlined best practices for creating aging-friendly, healthy communities.  This included a focus on Outdoor Spaces and Buildings, highlighting the importance of walk-ability among all neighborhoods, especially racially and economically diverse communities where walking is often interrupted by physical and social barriers.
